🌍 Cultural Do's and Don'ts

The Maldives is a Muslim nation. While resorts are private and have a relaxed atmosphere, it's crucial to be respectful of local customs, especially when visiting the capital, Malé, or any inhabited local islands.

• Do Dress Modestly: When on local islands, both men and women should cover their shoulders and knees . Bikinis and swimwear are only acceptable at resort beaches or designated "bikini beaches" on local islands .

• Do Respect Religious Customs: You will hear the call to prayer multiple times a day. During the holy month of Ramadan, be considerate and avoid eating, drinking, or smoking in public on local islands during daylight hours .

• Don't Bring Alcohol: It is illegal to import alcohol into the Maldives. Any alcohol found in your luggage at the airport will be confiscated. Alcohol is only available at licensed resorts and liveaboard boats .

• Don't Display Public Affection: On inhabited islands, public displays of affection beyond holding hands are discouraged and considered disrespectful. In the Maldives, same-sex relationships are illegal. While resort staff are generally professional and private, the law applies everywhere in the country, including at resorts. Public displays of affection could carry legal risk.
